NACURH Educational Program Of The Month - Saluki Life Carnival

SIU Residence Life has some great things going on, and we want to showcase some of our proud moments on our blog.

Today we are taking a brief break from our Resident Assistant Spotlight series to share some exciting news. Saluki Life Carnival was named the Educational Program Of The Month by the National Association of College and University Residence Halls (NACURH).

"Student Rights & Responsibilities at SIU collects a "financial condition of sanction" when students are found responsible for certain violations (typically related to alcohol or cannabis). The philosophy behind the financial condition is to take money out of the alcohol/drug economy and put it towards educational programs on campus. Money collected during the 2013-2014 academic year was earmarked to be spent on programming to educate students about the choices they will encounter in the upcoming year and the possible consequences of the decisions they could make. Additionally, the educational components of the event were designed to promote realistic and positive social norms about alcohol, tobacco, drugs, sex, and sexual assault. Student Rights and Responsibilities reached out to University Housing to help implement this program in order to reach one of the largest first-year student populations: those who live in on-campus residence halls."

Additionally, this month Amber Manning-Ouellette, Director of Enrollment Management for the College of Business, was named the SIU Institution Faculty/Staff Of The Month. "When I think of people at Southern Illinois University who discovered what they love and committed themselves to serving others, Amber Manning-Ouellette is one who rises to the top of the list." Why did you become an RA? I became an RA so that I can help people. My freshman year, my RAs helped me out so much, I wanted to do the same. Also, so I can meet lots of new and amazing people.

What is your dream job? Dream job would be to become a Certified Substance Abuse Counselor

Best advice you would give to a new student on campus? Get to know your RAs. We are people and students just like you. And to get up and go to class.

Why did you become an RA? Many reasons: to be a part of a community that makes a big difference in the lives of students, to gain valuable experience for my future, and to better myself by being exposed to a diversity of people. Always have more to give than you've got to prove.

What is your dream job? I wish to be a Zoo Veterinarian and to take part in bio-medical research which will aid in the conservation of a wide variety of species. I also wish to inspire others on the importance of cohabitation with all life on earth.

Best advice you would give to a new student on campus? GET EXPERIENCE NOW!! It is never too early to get some sort of leadership or job-related experience. It will make getting a job or going to grad school after graduation way easier for you in the long run :)​

What’s your name? – Julia Mosebach (proudly representing Schneider Empire!)

What’s your major? – Psychology

Where is the best place to study on campus? – The fourth floor of the library. Turn left off of the elevator and walk past every single book shelf. Turn the corner and there you will see a plush chair with a foot rest. No one ever is back there, and it is so quiet and comfy!

What is your favorite book? – The Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare

What is your favorite food in the dining halls? – Vegetarian stir fry :)

What is your favorite local restaurant? – Longbranch! That harvest wrap, though…

Why did you become an RA? – I love helping people through difficulties they're having and being an active listener whenever needed, and I knew that would be a part of my job.

What is your dream job? – Clinical Psychologist (who miraculously has time to travel the world and write novels every now and then).

Best advice you would give to a new student on campus? – Don’t be afraid to be uncertain of why you’re here. Throughout high school it is always forced upon us to have strict career goals and a plan, but a part of college (and possibly the most exciting part, at that) is figuring out what you love.​

RA Spotlight - Christopher Weiss of University Hall

     

Hello everyone! I’m Christopher Weiss, an RA at University Hall. I currently live on the 2nd floor which has been named Mavro House. I am from Batavia, Illinois and I am studying Automotive Technology. I don’t read a lot but from the books I have read my favorite has got to be Angels and Demons by Dan Brown. My favorite place to study is in the small dining room within University Hall, but a great place to get away and relax is the courtyard on the second floor of Faner. It’s hard to find if you are new or not there often, but it is a very nice place. I really enjoy the fresh sandwiches that are made in Trueblood Dining Hall; I get one every day. I love great Chinese food so I will occasionally go get New Kahala, especially now that they moved one block from the residence halls.

I became an RA because I wanted to have some sort of leadership experience in my resume when I left Southern Illinois University. This is a great role to get that experience, and I wanted to put some of my youth leadership skills that I gained from my activity in Boy Scouts of America in my home town. It also is a great feeling when I am able to help out my residents with questions they have and to be a resource for them.

I am currently refining my resume and cover letter to be prepared for the work force. I would love to be employed with Ford Motor Company when I graduate. I know I will have to start at the bottom, but I want to work my way up and achieve a leadership role when I am employed with Ford. There is so much advice that I could give new residents and transferring students. The best advice that most continuing students, including myself, will say is to be involved at SIU. Academics come first but staying involved in clubs (RSOs), a campus job, campus events, your residence hall, and other social activities is going to help you so much. It will help you make lasting friendships as well as keep you busy during your free time. It is a great thing to put on a resume and it helps you meet some of your classmates and fellow residents in your building, campus, and your classes.

What is your favorite local restaurant? I love going to Cristaudo's

Why did you become an RA? I became an RA because I wanted to help make students feel more welcome and comfortable in the residence halls. I am a transfer, so I went through the whole transition to college thing twice, and I wanted to help make the transition easier for other students as well as just be able to be there for anyone who needed my help.

What is your dream job? I would love to work for the marketing and sales team for the Los Angeles Kings or really any NHL team.

Best advice you would give to a new student on campus? Don't be afraid to ask questions, and definitely, if you don't understand something, go to your professor's office hours. They're there to help you!
