Working at the Desk by Stephanie Kippenberger, University Hall Desk

The opportunity to work as a desk assistant in the residence halls is a beneficial experience, both educationally and professionally. I have been a desk assistant at University Hall, a residence hall at Southern Illinois University Carbondale, since August of 2008.
As a desk assistant, our top priority is to maintain the security of the building. We monitor the building by checking identification cards, keeping documentation of the guests residents bring in, and communicating with other staff to make sure the status of the residents and the building is in good condition at all times.
As a student, being a desk assistant is a privilege. The shifts are short, scheduling is flexible, and there is often leisure time which great for getting homework done. Working at the desk is also a wonderful way to become familiar with on-campus resources, stay up to date with campus events, and network with experienced professionals.
Being a desk assistant is a student job that gives you more than spending money, it is a job that enhances your college experience.
