Living Learning Communities in University Housing by Kathie Lorentz, Assistant Director for Academic Initiatives

Research here at SIU has shown us that students that live on Living Learning Communities (LLC’s) floors have higher grade point averages and more persistence then students who don’t live on those floors. Here in University Housing we take our program seriously, working individually and collaboratively with each college on campus to produce the best experience possible. There are so many benefits to living in a Living Learning Community. To mention a few, residents in LLCs are more aware of and engaged in leadership opportunities within the campus, spend more time with faculty/staff outside the classroom, and interact with peers and study groups in the comfort of their campus home.

Many students do not realize the benefits until they actually experience the dynamics of each hall or floor. On the Architectural LLC, students begin to study together around 10:00p.m. in the evening in order to work on their class assignments. In the Engineering LLC, students place butcher block paper on their outside room windows and doors to work collaboratively in solving math equations. Other communities enjoy the company of dining with their professors in the dining hall.

At SIUC, each community is unique and designed to fit the needs of students. Faculty and staff from the various academic units really enjoy spending time interacting and coaching students Living in Living Learning Communities.

Recently, our LLCs staged a bowling competition at the Student Center against one another. Residents and faculty from the Colleges of Business, Liberal Arts, and Engineering and the School of Architecture LLCs participated in the competition, which was won by the School of Architecture LLC. A slide show featuring pictures from the event can be found below.
