Meet the RAs! - Mariah Patz

SIU Residence Life has some great things going on, and we want to showcase some of our proud moments on our blog. We also hope people considering working in RA, graduate assistant, or full-time positions with our department will take a minute to learn more about the things we are doing. More information about our department, including position descriptions, application information, and graduate and full-time staff profiles can be found on our recruitment website.

As we recruit new Resident Assistants for the 2014-2015 year, we wanted to introduce a few of the talented individuals currently on our team. This profile features Mariah Patz, RA in University Hall.

What is your name? Mariah Patz

Where are you from? A small town in Northwest Indiana, of less than 800 residents

What’s your major? I am earning a BA in Psychology and a BS in Rehabilitation Services.

What is the best program or event you have been to on campus? I would have to say the best programs I have ever been to on campus are the simple ones. Game nights are perfect because it allows everyone who attends a chance to get to know others and have conversations while bonding over strategies and topics that the games bring up.

What is the last book you read for fun? Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen

What is your favorite thing about being an RA? I enjoy forming relationships with new students each semester, and how they stay close even when the semester is over and the ability to be a resource for students.

How else are you involved at SIU? I am an active member in two RSOs on campus, the BAT (Behavior Analysis and Therapy) Club, and STARS (Students Together Advocating Rehabilitation Services).

Where do you see yourself in 10 years? In ten years, I see myself having spent time in the Peace Corps, and having a Masters in Behavior Analysis under my belt working with BAT in an addiction setting, hopefully in a warmer climate.

What is your favorite quote? “It always seems impossible until it’s done.” – Nelson Mandela

What do you do to unwind when you’re feeling stressed? Taking a shower always relieves my stress, it is something about hot water that just clears my thoughts.
