2011 Alternative Spring Break Trip to New Orleans - Jeremi Cheeks, Allen Hall Director

GET INVOLVED!! We find ourselves telling our students this every day. One way students get involved in University Housing is through our Area Councils. Area Councils provide opportunities for our students to program and advocate for their fellow residents, collaborate with organizations and departments outside of University Housing, and meet new people!

Recently, our Area Councils sponsored 21 residents to participate in an Alternative Spring Break (ASB) in the bayou of New Orleans. These 21 students spent a week working with Habitat for Humanity to aid in rebuilding efforts. This ASB was in support of our Saluki First Year's Remembrance of the 5 year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina.

Each day, after the service project students were given the opportunity to experience New Orleans. Students visited the lower ninth ward to see where the levies broke and rebuilding efforts of celebrities, such as Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt. Students also experienced good ole’ New Orleans Cajun seafood. While some delighted in the gumbo and crawfish, it just wasn’t for everyone.

As one of the four advisors on the trip, it was rewarding to see the various relationships built and the impact this experience had on our students.

Below is a slide show of the pictures taken during the ASB.
