You Better Recognize by Jac Jewell

SIU Residence Life has some great things going on, and we want to showcase some of our proud moments on our blog. We also hope people considering working in RA, graduate assistant, or full-time positions with our department will take a minute to learn more about the things we are doing. More information about our department, including position descriptions, application information, and graduate and full-time staff profiles can be found on our recruitment website. Today's blog post was written by Jac Jewell, Hall Director in Schneider Hall, about the value of recognition.

You Better Recognize!

I have never met a person who does not appreciate recognition in one way or another. Sure, we all have different ways we like to be recognized, but at the core we all like to be told we are doing a good job.

I have always found recognition important for two reasons. The first is to increase confidence. When my supervisor tells me I am doing a good job with a project, I instantly gain more confidence and am able to finish the project stronger. The second is to decrease stress. It is easy to stress about the amount of work you are doing between a job, school, and other organizations. When someone takes a second to give you positive feedback you are almost re-energized in what you are doing because you see that stress paying off.

One of the ways I encourage recognition is through the National Residence Hall Honorary (NRHH) “Of the Month” (OTM) awards. OTMs are written on hundreds of campuses across the nation to recognize a wide variety of people and events from the month. Anyone on campus can write an OTM and there is a category for everything you could think of. Once an OTM is submitted the campus voting committee, made up of NRHH members and University Housing staff members, vote on campus winners. All of our campus winners go to the regional level, the Great Lakes Association of College and University Residence Halls (GLACURH) where their voting committee votes. If we have any OTMs that win regionally, they are submitted to the National Association of College and University Residence Halls (NACURH).

My first academic year advising NRHH we had 252 OTMs submitted on campus with 15 regional winners and one national winner. My second academic year advising NRHH we have had 100 OTMs submitted on campus with five regional winners and five national winners. Also remember we have six more months of this academic year left!

I have done a few things to get more OTM submissions during my time as the NRHH advisor. The biggest thing is rewarding the winners. Every month I print out a certificate for the campus winners with the OTM on the back of it. Campus winners also get an NRHH water bottle as congratulations on winning. I bring OTMs up at every Senior Staff meeting and Residence Hall Association meeting. My NRHH members have also done an amazing job of talking to people about how to write a quality OTM.

Have you stopped and given someone some positive feedback lately? Take a second and tell someone they are doing a great job, you will give them a new energy! And if you have seen something awesome, write an OTM! (http://www.otms.nrhh.org)
